Flashy, feisty, and freakishly clever — this is the bird that thinks it runs the neighbourhood. Recognised by its brilliant yellow crest and unmistakable screech, the sulphur-crested cockatoo is one of Australia’s best-known parrots. Highly social and incredibly intelligent, they can mimic human speech, dismantle locks, and solve puzzles. They’re not endangered, but their increasing presence in cities has caused some conflict (especially with roof tiles and power poles). In the wild, they can live for over 70 years, forming lifelong pair bonds and large, noisy flocks. Basically: don’t underestimate the bird with the best hair.
