Screech! Sleek, dramatic, and a bit mysterious — the red-tailed black cockatoo is basically the goth rockstar of the Australian bush. With glossy black plumage and a vibrant scarlet tail (more vivid in males), they’re most often spotted in pairs or small flocks, feeding on native seeds. But not all red-tails are doing well — the South-eastern Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is endangered, with fewer than 1,500 individuals left in the wild. Habitat clearing, especially of nesting hollows and food trees like stringybark, has hit them hard. Powerful flyers, loyal partners, and fierce parents — they’re as iconic as they are endangered.
